The best photos are beyond the highlight reel.
The details–expressions, movement, objects–together they tell a story. With documentary photos, there's no telling you what to do or fussing over a fussy baby. No posing or practicing or prompting. Just me watching and being present with you, documenting it all.
VOTED AMONG THE BEST FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHERS IN MINNEAPOLIS
"My family had such a wonderful experience working with Kara! She recommended the perfect location and the photos came out absolutely beautiful! We love the candid shots she captured of us interacting with our boys. We have a two year old and a 7 month old, so not the easiest age group to work with, but Kara was fantastic! She was patient and let the moments happen naturally. We will definitely be working with Kara again and would absolutely recommend her services!" (Susanna I.)
REAL, RAW STORIES AREN'T DIRECTED. THEY ARE CAPTURED, THEN SET FREE.
Documentary-style photography is not only knowing how to see perfection, but also understanding what it takes to capture it. As your documentarian, I aim to tell the real story, not a fabricated one, in photos.
I love helping people see the beauty of the story that's already there, without fluff of neatly folded hands or strain and stuffiness of eyes straight to the camera. I love to nix the rigidity of rules. Spills and spontaneous dancing. Messy faces and dimly lit spaces. It's all welcome.
If documentary photography were a person, she'd be curious, patient, quiet, and confident. Full of joy and the epitome of life. A free spirit finding wonder in every adventure, big and small. Independent, non-adhering, and comfortable with being wildly and wonderfully different.
She wouldn't wait for the next well-defined milestone to choose to celebrate and slow down to remember. She would choose now, knowing that the current moment is fleeting. Her awareness fueling the desire to live fiercely. Right now.
Raw, natural, unhindered, relevant, unprompted, spontaneous. Real life.
A proposal, a wedding, a new baby–those are the moments that are "supposed" to be photographed. They are important to remember, yes, but they are merely milestones. And in between? That's where life happens. That's where the story happens. Baking a treat, bath time, learning to ride a bike, a pizza date night, you decide which story you want to remember most, and I'll help you tell it.
Sessions are on location (inside or outdoors) and are customizable based on shooting hours. All sessions include up to 30 miles travel from Maple Grove, MN. The number of images depends on time spent shooting. Session fee applies.
