This was my second time shooting at Fish Lake Regional Park. The weather was epic for May in Minnesota. I love that we were able to capture so much variety in one location. I love to kick off my sessions with some documentary photos, so I had the family start on the beach. I posed the family for a few "message in a bottle" pregnancy announcement photos, before we walked a short distance to a bridge. We ended the session with the family dipping their toes in the lake and walking along the beach.
A challenge I overcame during the shoot: Some toddlers take a while to warm up. I love that this little guy was jumping and squealing "BIG BROTHER!" by the middle of the session. Patience is a huge factor in working with a slow to warm toddler. I never want to force or rush anything. It also helped that we spent time playing near the water and in the sand with a toy truck.
What I liked most about the shoot: I LOVED that the parents opted to strip their toddler down to his diaper at the end of the shoot and let him wade through the water. It led to some of my favorite photos. The light had shifted to be a touch more soft, and the toddler was more relaxed by this point too.
