Preparing for Your Session
QUESTIONNAIRE + OUTFITS
You'll fill out a simple form or two so that I can get to know your family a bit! It also gives you a chance to let me know your preferences. Then I'll send along style advice, and we'll work together to choose a location.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO STRESS ABOUT HEADING TO A STUDIO.
I'll photograph your newborn in the comfort of your own home. But this doesn't mean we have to stay inside the whole time. The crib, the changing table, your couch, your front porch—it all works!
NEWBORN SESSIONS ARE VERY RELAXED.
We'll have plenty of time and can move at a slow pace. I won't place your baby in unnatural positions or force anything. You don't have to make sure your baby is fed or squeeze in a nap before the
session. If she's hungry during your session, go ahead and nurse! It won't matter if she's awake or asleep when I get there. I will adapt to whatever your baby needs. Every newborn session looks a little different, and that's totally fine.
WE'LL HIGHLIGHT YOUR SWEETEST MOMENTS.
Here are some things you might want to consider having photographed during your newborn session: Changing an outfit, nursing, rocking her to sleep, her in her crib, bath time. You may want some shots of her swaddled. You're free to use one of my receiving blankets.
LET'S TELL A STORY
Because perfect is boring.
When I photograph my kids, I'm not sitting there thinking, Man, it's going to be so great to have a picture of this and be able to think back to that time I made my kids cry because they weren't sitting perfectly still and smiling right. I'm capturing their personalities. Him pouring a glass of water over his head in the middle of summer. Her figure skating-like scooter moves. Movement and mess. Laughter and no stress.
I want you to have that too! I want to photograph your family just as you are. No tears. No forcing anything. Messes and fart jokes are welcome.
WHAT'S A TYPICAL FAMILY SESSION LIKE?
About a week before your shoot I'll send out an email reminder. I'll also send you a text the day before or day of your shoot. This way we'll also have each other's number handy in case we need it.
If we aren't shooting inside your home, I will arrive to our location early to scout out the light and choose some spots for us. I'll often text a pin drop of where I am when I arrive. But text or call if you get turned around or are confused about where to park! I will have my phone in my hand until I see you.
A lot of clients like to listen to music during their session, so I bring a small speaker. This can be especially helpful for young kids!
I like to start my sessions with very low pressure photos. I'll have your family interact and connect while doing something simple, like throwing rocks in the water, playing in the sand, enjoying nearby flowers, walking through a field. This helps everyone loosen up and little ones warm up to me.
Then we'll capture some movement and move towards lifestyle photos (which involves some directing). This might be sitting on a blanket and playing with your kids or a child running towards me or swinging a child in the air. We'll spend more of our time taking these types of shots.
I'll take a handful of classic portraits throughout. But one thing I like to tell families for lifestyle photography is this: We won't force anything.
"Everything was captured so naturally and beautifully. I highly recommend Kara. She is responsive, professional and goes above and beyond."

The 10 Baby Registry Items You'll Actually Use
There are so many baby items out there these days. The gadgets keep getting fancier and as the money-making monsters play off that thick mom fear and those nesting urges, there seems to be an item for every possible situation. Here are the items you'll really need.
The Best Age to Take Newborn Photos
Some photographers have strict rules for when they'll photograph newborns. Some will even photograph the birth or come to your hospital as soon as your baby arrives. So what are newborn photos exactly, when should you schedule them, and when's the ideal time to take them?
